Judith Banks, 64
Judith Anne Rankin Banks, 64, 9805 Winchester Road, Clay City, widow of George Daniel Banks, died Sunday at her home. She was born June 16, 1945 in Paris, Kentucky to the late William Perry Rankin and Juanita Curtis Rankin.
Survivors include her mother, Juanita Rankin, Stanton; step-son, Danny Vernon and wife, Karen Banks, Winchester; step-daughter, Gina and husband, George Purvis, Stanton; brothers, Jackie Rankin, Stanton and William and wife, Janie Rankin, Warsaw; six grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, brothers, Warner and James Rankin, and sisters, Dolores Rice and Wilhelmina Rankin.
Services were held on Thursday, Oct. 29, at 1 p.m. at the West Bend Church of God by Rev. George Sparks and Rev. Bill Boldt.
Pallbearers were Daniel Banks, Chris Banks, Zackery Banks, Scott Jones, Jason Jones, Grant Jones, Chas Joslin, and Justin Walters. Honorary pallbearers were Brandon Rice, Richard Rice, Greg Adams, Greg Purvis, Will Rankin, Colin Rankin, Brian Rankin, Johnny Lee Rankin, Andrew Rankin, Jeremy Walters, Billy Joe Rankin, Jeff Vance, Robert Rice, Hannah Rice, and Elizabeth Rankin. Burial followed in Clarmont Memorial Gardens, Winchester. The family would like to thank Hospice East for their kindness and care during this time. Wells Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Ruby Burgher, 88
Ruby Catherine Douglas Burgher, 88, of Clay City, passed away on Thursday, Oct. 22, 2009, in Lake Panasoffkee, Fla. She was the seventh child of nine children born on Oct. 12, 1921 to Dr. Smith Walker and Anna Douglas of Eudora, Arkansas who preceded her in death. She was married to Edmon Burgher, Jr. of Clay City, on July 20, 1947 who preceded her in death in 2001.
“Catherine” was a member of the Salem Baptist Church near Irvine. Jointly appointed with her husband as missionaries to the Russian speaking people in Los Angeles, Ca., she ministered alongside her husband as a faithful wife, mother and helper in the ministry for 54 years.
Catherine is survived by a brother, Max Douglas of Owensboro, a sister, Elizabeth Jennings, of Eudora, Ar., and a sister-in-law, Loraine Kaufman of Louisville.
Other survivors include: four sons and one daughter, Benjamin Douglas Burgher and wife Sherri of Clay City, David Allen Burgher and wife Nancy of Lawrenceville, GA., Timothy Everett Burgher and wife Marcia of California, Mo., Don Thomas Burgher and wife Betsy of Brooksville, Fla, and Nancy Ann Britton and husband Mike of Travares, Fla. Surviving her also are 15 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
Services were held on Monday, Oct. 26, at 3 p.m. at the Salem Baptist Church by Rev. Jerry Smith. Burial followed in Salem Cemetery. Wells Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Sam E. Cecil, 67
Sam E. Cecil, M.D., 67, husband of Anne Cecil, of Stanton, died Saturday, Oct. 24, 2009 at St. Joseph East in Lexington. He was born in Morgan County, the son of the late Albert Boyd and Ruth Oney Cecil and a member of Stanton Baptist Church. He was a 1960 graduate of Ezel High School where he was a member of the basketball team, a 1964 graduate of Berea College and a 1968 graduate of U. K. Medical School.
Dr. Sam Cecil opened his family medical practice office in Stanton in 1970 serving the Powell County area until the present. He was a former chairman of the Powell County Board of Health and a former attending physician at Stanton Nursing Center.
Surviving relatives are his wife of 43 years, Anne Hadley Cecil; two sons: David and his wife Maru Cecil of Lexington, and Darin and his wife Lorraine Cecil of Richmond; two sisters: Barbara and her husband Charles Taylor of Ohio and Delena Manning of Hazel Green, and three grandchildren: Tanner Cecil, Carly Cecil and Braden Cecil all of Richmond. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by one sister, Phyllis Ann.
Funeral services were officiated by Rev. Troy Luttrell at 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 28, 2009 at Hearne Funeral Home Chapel, 125 West College Avenue, Stanton. Burial followed in Stonegate Cemetery, Stanton with David Cecil, Darin Cecil, Justin Wickline, Jack Gross, Jr., Gary Bowen and Hondo Hearne having served as his active pallbearers.
Honorary pallbearers were Charles Taylor, Carl Bryant, Bart Bryant, James Ed Dennis, Dr. Charles Noss, Dr. David Barnes, Dr. Avichai Eres, Dr. Paul Maddox, Doug Collins, Steve Mallory, Barry Rose, Joyce Hearne, Paul Pelfrey and Boyd Herbert Murphy. Emma Katherine Creager, 81, of Woodville, formerly of Cane Creek, in Stanton, died on Thursday, Oct. 22, 2009. She was the beloved wife of the late Erwin Russell Creager, dear mother of Ronnie Creager, Morgan (Sandie) Creager, Melanie (Mark) Conover, Chris (Karen) Creager; caring sister of Pearl Baker, Lewis Wierman, Jeanette Valentine, Marge Johnson; and the loving grandmother of 16 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren.

Jarrod T. Miller, 18
Jarrod Tyler Miller, 18, of Walnut Grove in Irvine, passed away Thursday, Oct. 22, 2009 in Powell County. He was born May 23, 1991 in Montgomery County and was the son of Jerald Eugene Miller, Jr. and Tonja Denise Robinson Miller. He had lived in Estill County all of his life.
He is survived by his parents Jerald Eugene Miller, Jr. of Estill County and Tonja Denise Robinson Miller of Powell County. His grandparents Charles and Marie Robinson of Estill County, Jerald E. and Beverly Miller, Sr. of Berea, Barbara and Jerry Warner of Estill County. His great-grandmother Willene Riddell of Estill County; two brothers Dylan Casey Miller and Jeremy Isiah Miller both of Estill County. Also several aunts and uncles.
Graveside services were conducted Saturday, Oct. 24, 2009 at the Tuggle Cemetery by Bro. Bill Wesley and Bro. Junior Lamb. Pallbearers were Shawn Robinson, Andy Wiseman, Timothy Kyle Rawlins, Jason Alcorn, Ryan Wiseman, James Hoover, Devin Wiseman, and Walter McKinney. Honorary pallbearers were Dylan Miller, Johnny Dunaway, Christy Hardy, Dwayne Alcorn, Christopher Smith, Nick Johnson, Anthony Bellamy, Jeremy Miller, Simon Rogers.
Blake Ely Smith
Blake Ely Smith, infant son of Russell and Kari Shackelford Smith, died shortly after birth on Saturday, Sept. 26, 2009 in Cincinnati, Ohio. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Ely Smith.
Survivors, other than his parents, include his brother, Russell Ely Smith, Jr. and sister, Desiree LeAnn Smith, both of Irvine; paternal grandmother, Joann Smith of Irvine; maternal grandparents, Robert Earl Geiger and Kathleen Jarrell of Clay City.
Services were conducted on Thursday, Oct. 1 at 1 p.m. at St. Timothy Episcopal Mission, Barnes Mountain, with Bro. Douglas Baker officiating. Burial followed at the Spencer Ridge Cemetery in Lee County.
