For the past 27 years Powell County Attorney Office Secretary Vanessa “Poodle” Mathews has been a friendly face that was a staple around the Powell County Attorney’s office in helping assisting anyone in need the help at the Powell County Courthouse. On August 31 Mathews officially retired from the Powell County Attorney’s office.
Mathews says that one of the most rewarding parts of her job while working in the Powell County Attorney’s Office has been getting to help so many people.
“I enjoyed that more than anything just helping the people. A lot of people would come not knowing where to go, or what to do, or which office go in and I just tried to help,” Mathews said. “Helping the people was my favorite thing.”
Mathews start working in the Powell County Circuit Clerks Office in 1977 and was approached by former Powell County Attorney Jeff Stiles when he was looking to start his own solo law practice in May 1980 and needed somebody to manage the office for him.
Ten years later Jeff Stiles would make a run for the election of County Attorney against incumbent John Cox in November 1989. Mathews would follow Stiles to the Powell County Attorney Office the following January in 1990.
According to Former Powell County Attorney Jeff Stiles Mathews was an imperative part of the success of his law career after he we moved to Powell County.
“She was huge help when I moved here after I had just got out of law school at the University of Louisville I really didn’t know anybody and she’s got that great personality and is so great with the public,” Former Powell County Attorney Jeff Stiles said. “Now that I look back the best decision I ever made was to hire ‘Poodle’ I had a very successful career here, I’ve been elected to four terms and I don’t think any of that would have happened if I hadn’t hired ‘Poodle.’”
