Elouise Atkinson, 88
Elouise Lorraine Atkinson, 88, formerly of Stanton, passed away on Saturday, Jan. 14, 2012 at the Norton Audubon Hospital in Louisville. Born at Furnace in Estill County, she was the daughter of the late Earnest and Amanda Allen Brandenburg. Lorraine was a retired state employee of the Mt. Parkway Toll Gate and she was a member of the Stanton Assembly of God. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by one brother, James Brandenburg; two sisters, Hazel Walters and Mary Alice Diehl and by her stepmother, Mabel Brandenburg.
She is survived by three sons: William Jerry (Beth) Barnett, Rancho Cordova, CA, Paul David (Christine) Atkinson, Versailles and John Daniel (Melissa) Atkinson, Louisville; two daughters: Brenda (Donald) Riggs, Louisville and Linda Thorpe, West Melbourne, FL; half brother, Ronald Brandenburg, Flemingsburg; 10 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren.

Virgie Reeves, 77
Virgie Thacker Reeves, 77, of Morris Creek Road, Stanton, passed away on Wednesday, Jan. 11, 2012 at her residence. Born in Cob Hill located in Estill County, she was the daughter of the late Sidney and Ruby Smith Warmouth. She was a former nurse’s aid at Stanton Nursing Center and she was a member of the Booneville Church of Christ. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her first husband, Charles Thacker.
She is survived by her husband, Robert E. Reeves; two sons, Jeffrey Charles Thacker and Michael David Thacker of Irvine; two daughters, Sheila Renee Centers of Richmond and Shari Denise Rogers of Winchester; two stepdaughters, Teresa K. Marvin and Telina R. McAlister of Michigan; one brother, Arthur (Marie) Warmouth of Ohio; one sister, Margaret (Gainus) Rogers of Irvine; 12 grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.

Helen C. Smith, 72
Helen Combs Smith, 72, of High Rock Road, Stanton, formerly of Winchester, passed away on Jan. 11, 2012 at the UK Medical Center in Lexington. Born in Powell County, she was the daughter of the late Doyle F. and Florida Sparks Combs. She was a former factory employee of Wintech in Winchester and she was a member of the Estill County and Powell County Historical Societies. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by two brothers, Calvin Combs and Howard Combs and by her half sister, Carolyn Tipton.
Surviving relatives are her daughter, Opal Dawn Smith of Lexington; two brothers: Forest Combs of Winchester and James Combs of Lexington; four sisters: Vernetta Watts of Stanton, Lovisa Taulbee, Velma (Bobby) Bailey and Sondra Morgan all of Winchester; a half brother, Doyle Combs, Jr. of northern Kentucky; a half sister, Brenda Curtis of Paris and a host of nieces and nephews.

Jeffery L. Tipton, 44
Jeffery L. Tipton, 4748 Spout Springs Road, Irvine, passed away Saturday, Dec. 31, 2011 at his home. He was born Dec. 11, 1967 in Winchester to the late Andy Tipton Jr. and Sadie Caudill Tipton. He was a Univance employee.
Survivors include his mother, Sadie Tipton, Irvine; sons, Jesse and Luke Tipton, both of Stanton; and ex-wife, Allison Tipton, Stanton. He was preceded in death by his father, Andy Tipton Jr.
Services were held on Jan. 3 at Wells Clay City Chapel by Rev. Scott Rogers. Burial was in Powells Valley Cemetery, Clay City with Jamie Back, Johnny Caudill, Doug Smith, David Smith, Ronnie Smith, Alex Bolduc, Wesley “Homie” Sexton, David Kissick, Shawn Stewart, Bob Osman, Cliff Ballard, and Scott Angel having served as pallbearers. Mary Webb, 96
Mary Estelle Combs Webb, 96, Murphy’s California, died Dec. 25, 2011 at Mark Twain Convalescent Hospital, San Andreas, California. She was born May 11, 1915 at Nada in Powell County to the late John Monroe and Elizabeth Lawson Combs. Estelle was retired from JC Penny Co. after working 42 years as a sales representative.
She is survived by one daughter Louise (Ed) Dixon, Murphy’s California, one sister Opal Combs Napier Begley, Stanton; also three grandchildren and five great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews which include Roger Baker, Betty Gentry, Virginia Boyd, and Larry Napier all of Powell County and Avenell Whisman, West Liberty.
Estelle was preceded in death by an infant daughter Ruth Webb, three sisters Ethel Moore, Leona Niedershmidt, Edna Baker and six brothers Audney, Ernest, Arnold, Buford, Willie and Earl Combs.
Burial was at Flora Hills Memorial Gardens, Covington.
