Veteran’s Day Program
The Powell County High School staff and students would like to invite all Veterans and community to attend our annual Veteran’s Day program on Wednesday Nov. 11, at 9 a.m. in the Bill Orme Gymnasium.
Anyone wishing to have a Veteran’s picture in the slideshow presentation may submit a photo to Kevin Babcock or Glynda Bowen at the high school by Wednesday Nov. 5. Those photos submitted in years past remain on the presentation and do not need to be resubmitted.
Your are cordially invited to Cinderella’s Ball on Saturday, Nov 14, from 4-8 pm. Arrive anytime at the Powell Co. High School, Stanton. Tickets are $10 in advance, $12 at door; Escorts $4 age 18-up.Come and meet your favorite princess! Ladies and Knights of all ages are invited to attend an evening of enchantment! All little royalty will receive a goody bag to fill, an autograph book, and a gift from each princess. Feel free to dress in character if you like. Bring your cameras! Get pictures and autographs with your favorite prince or princess. “Tea and Refreshments” at Alice’s Tea Party Story time with Belle. Then end your evening with a horse drawn carriage ride!! Haunting in Mechanicsville will be held at 96 First Avenue in the Clay City Bottoms Oct. 29-31. Admission is $2, with half of all proceeds going to the Powell County Youth Soccer League. The hours for the haunting are: Oct. 29, 6:30-9:30 p.m.; Oct. 30-31, 6:30-10:30 p.m. WARNING: You will be scared, we are not responsible for any accidents or injuries, there will be flashing lights. Enter at your own risk. Come on out and have some fun, and look out for all the children.
Red River Little League Softball Elections
It is time to hold elections for officers for the Red River Little League Softball Organization, per Little League International rules. The meeting will be held on Friday, Nov. 6 at 6:30 p.m. at the Whitaker Bank in Stanton. There will be all six positions open as required and any parent of a player, coach, assistant coach, umpire, concession worker, team parent or anyone that helped the league last year season is eligible to vote. Anyone who cannot attend may pick up an Absentee Ballot from James Cook at the Clay City Times. All ballots will be secured and are anonymous. The final nominations, vote and tallies will occur at the Nov. 6 meeting, with all results being announced that night.

The Kentucky Blood Center will be conducting a blood drive in Stanton on Oct. 29 at the Powell County High School from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. The drive will be held in the gym foyer. Those wanting to donate blood can call 1-800-775-2522 or visit www.kybloodcenter.org for blood drive and donor center details. Blood donors must be 17 (16 with parental consent, the parental permission form can be found on the website and must be signed before you can give blood), weigh at least 110 pounds, be in general good health and meet additional requirements.

How to Establish a Drug-Free Home
The local Estill/Powell Counties Kentucky ASAP (Agency on Substance Abuse Policy) Board will be providing a series of 5 parenting classes for FREE. Leaders will use the evidence-based curriculum, Guiding Good Choices. It is geared for parents and caregivers of children ages 9-14 years of age. Classes will be held every Tuesday at the Head Start Building located on Ladonna Drive in Clay City from 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. Classes will take place on November 10, 17, Dec. 1, 8, and 15. The Powell County DAV Chapter #103 has changed their meeting dates from the third Tuesday of each month to the second Thursday at 6 p.m.
The Powell County Senior Citizens Center will be having their 12th Annual Christmas Bazaar on Saturday, Nov. 7 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Stanton City Park Building. There will be lots of items for sale, hot dogs and chili, and a Silent Auction. All proceeds go toward buying meals for the elderly in the county. For more information, call 663-5981.

The Powell County Higher Education Development Board will meet on the third Thursday of each month at the Powell County High School Library at 6 p.m.

The Powell County Health Department and the Powell County Extension Office will hold a series of four Diabetes 101 classes on Tuesdays-Nov. 3 and 10. The classes will begin at 6 p.m. and will be held at the Powell County Extension Office. Different topics will be covered each night such as an overview of diabetes, meal plans, medications & insulin and preventing complications.
