Story Time at the Powell County Public Library is every Thursday from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. for ages 3 to 5 years. We will read stories, do crafts and sometimes a movie.
Financial Peace Classes
The same program initiated by Dave Ramsey, Financial Peace, will be held at the Powell County Library on Thursdays, from April 8-June 24, 12 consecutive weeks, from 6:30-8:30 p.m. There is no cost for residents of Powell, Estill, Madison or Clark counties and this is being sponsored by Foothills CAP. Weigh Down Powell County
The Powell County Health Coalition is sponsoring a county wide weight loss competition called Weigh Down Powell County beginning Wednesday, April 14. Participants will weigh in each week for 10 weeks and can attend optional free classes. Class schedules will be given at registration. Several prizes will be given throughout the competition with the grand prizes being $250 Kentucky State Parks gift cards to the overall male and female winners. There is a one-time registration fee of $10 and everyone will receive a t-shirt. Participants will choose a weigh-in location and register there on April 14. Weigh-in locations are: Powell County Health Department, Powell County Extension Office, Ertel Medicine & Pediatrics, Red River Health Care, Curves, Powell County Clinic and Powell Prescription Center. To help kick off the Weigh Down Powell County Competition, the Powell County Health Coalition has invited “Coach Mo” from NBC’s the Biggest Loser to speak on Tuesday, April 20 at 6:30 p.m. at the Powell County High School Cafeteria. Mozziz DeWalt is a native of Louisville and has lost over 90 pounds since appearing on the reality TV show. There is no charge for the event. Powell County Tourism Commission
The regular board meetings are held every fourth Wednesday at 1 pm. The meetings are held at the office in Slade (behind the red caboose). This month’s meeting has been moved to April 21st at 1 pm, in the office at Slade due to a Workstudy trip on the April 28 date. For more information call 606-663-1161.
The 18th Annual Kentucky Herb Festival will be held on Saturday, May 15 from 9 a.m.– 4 p.m. at the Lakeview Park, Franklin County Fairgrounds just off US 460 in Frankfort. There will be a $3.00 parking fee. Herbal sack lunch served 11 a.m.– 1 p.m., cost $7. Auction of garden and herbal items at noon. PCHS 5 Year Reunion
Powell County High School 5-Year General Class Reunion will be held Saturday, May 29, at the Powell County High School beginning at 12 noon. This reunion is for every student who has attended PCHS. A lunch menu is planned and the cost is $10 per person. There will also be a silent auction with all proceeds going to fund the scholarships given annually to seniors. An advance head count is required for the lunch so please send in your lunch reservation along with your payment no later than May 1 to Powell County High Alumni Assoc., P.O. Time’s Running Out
Attention Powell County Residents: Time is running out to apply for jobs as census takers in Powell County. If you are interested in earning $10.75 an hour, plus 50 cents per mile, apply today. Applicants will go door to door to visit homes that do not return the census questionnaire. You can work up to 40 hours per week and will work close to home, often in your own neighborhood. Most of the work would be done in the evenings and on weekends when most people are at home. The jobs will last from 5 to 10 weeks. Call 1-866-861-2010.
The Powell County DAV Chapter #103 has changed their meeting dates from the third Tuesday of each month to the second Thursday at 6 p.m.
Friends of PC Pets Meetings
Friends of Powell County’s Pets hold their monthly meetings at 6:30 p.m. on the first Tuesday of every month at the Clay City Elementary School. For more information call 606-424-4100. If the school is closed the group meets at Hood’s Pizza in Stanton.
Powell County Diabetes Support Group
Kentucky River Foothills Rural Health Network is sponsoring a Diabetes Support Class. Classes will meet every second Thursday of the month. Classes meet at the Powell Adult Day Care (behind Foothills Mobile Clinic) in Clay City from 4-5 p.m. For more info, please call Tena at 663-9011
